What are the promising future therapies in Parkinson’s Disease ?
Currently the drugs and therapies we have are very effective in controlling symptoms of Parkinson’ but do not slow the progression of the condition however there are some promising therapies currently being researched as follows:
1)Gene therapy -using genes as drugs to prevent the death of nerve cells or stimulate regeneration of these cells
2)Stem cell therapy -could be the first treatment to eventually offer an effective cure –researchers are looking at how the nerve cells which die in PD can be replaced with new healthy dopamine producing cells from stem cells grown in the lab
3)Trophic factors-proteins that support and protect subpopulations of cells
4)Neuroinflammation modification
